A snow-white feather rises in the air, then flutters to the ground, and Sun Zhenghai picks it up and throws it in with millions of others. Then he picks up a shuttle, the projectile used in badminton－each of which has 16 goose feathers－and shows it to visitors.
一片雪白的羽毛在空中升起，随后又飘落在地。孙正海捡起它，把它放进成堆的羽毛中。然后，他拿起一个羽毛球向参观者展示，每个球上有16片鹅毛。
Sun, the founder and president of Anhui Huayu Sports Goods, has witnessed the development of the local feather processing industry. His plant in Ganchahe township of Shucheng county in East China's Anhui province covers 6,700 square meters.
作为安徽华羽体育用品有限公司的创始人和董事长，孙正海见证了当地羽毛加工业的发展。这个面积6700多平方米的羽毛球生产车间就坐落在安徽舒城县的干汊河镇。
Anhui Huayu Sporting Goods sold more than 24 million badminton shuttles at home and overseas in 2021, accounting for about one-third of the township's annual production.
2021年，安徽华羽体育用品有限公司向国内外销售了2400万余只羽毛球，约占全镇当年产量的三分之一。
The city of Lu'an, which administers Shucheng county, annually produces more than 14 million Wanxi white geese, a local species, according to the local government.
另一方面，政府数据显示，舒城县所属的六安市每年产出1400多万羽皖西白鹅，这是一种当地特有的白鹅品种。
"The goose breeding sector provides an important material source for my business," Sun said.
孙正海说：“白鹅养殖业为我们的业务提供了重要的原材料。”
Sun, who was born in the late 1960s, is a native of the township's Hongdang village. In the early 1990s, he joined the villagers in the feather trade in rural areas.
孙正海出生于上世纪60年代末，是干汊河镇洪宕村人。90年代初，他跟乡亲们一起在农村地区做羽毛生意。
"I rode a bicycle to villages, buying goose and duck feathers kept by rural households," said Sun, who in turn sold the feathers to major dealers at a higher price.
“我骑自行车去村里，从村民手上收购鹅毛和鸭毛，”孙正海说，然后他又把这些羽毛以更高的价格转卖出去。
The business was laborious but profitable. He soon bought a motorbike so he could travel farther.
做这个生意是个辛苦活，但利润还不错。很快，他就买了辆摩托车，这样就可以去更远的地方。
In 1996, Sun started a workshop in the yard of his house. He processed the feathers that he had purchased－washing, sun-drying and slicing them－before selling them to companies outside Lu'an.
1996年，孙正海在自家院子里开了个作坊，他把买来的羽毛进行加工——清洗、晒干和切片，然后将其出售给六安以外的公司。
Local badminton shuttle producers gradually began to emerge and grow in number.
后来，当地的羽毛球加工企业逐渐兴起，越来越多。
"My business then soared and I had to purchase feathers from even outside Anhui province," said Sun.
孙正海说：“之后我的业务量猛增，于是我又不得不从安徽省外购买羽毛。”
In 2009, he invested 8 million yuan ($1.26 million) to build his company's plant and equip the assembly line.
2009年，他投资了800万元（126万美元）建设了公司的生产车间和流水线。
In 2017, due to the impact of e-commerce, traditional sales stagnated. "Then I persuaded my son and son-in-law to return from other cities to help me with online marketing," said Sun.
2017年，受电商影响，传统的销售渠道出现滞销。“于是我说服我的儿子和女婿从外地回来，帮我进行网络营销，”孙正海说。
With the success of companies such as Sun's, Ganchahe township's government has been cultivating and attracting more manufacturers, according to Wang Huanran, deputy Party secretary of the township, which has more than 40,000 residents.
据该镇党委副书记王焕然介绍，在当地，像孙正海的公司这样的企业还有很多，随着这些企业的成功，拥有四万多人口的干汊河镇逐渐培养和吸引了更多的制造型企业。
They began producing badminton shuttles, then rackets and sports shirts and shoes, according to Wang.
王焕然说，这些企业一开始生产羽毛球，然后是球拍、运动服和运动鞋。
"Now the township has more than 100 enterprises of feather processing and sporting goods, and the feather processing sector alone sees an annual output value of about 1.5 billion yuan," Wang said.
“如今我镇拥有100多家羽毛加工和体育用品企业，仅羽毛加工的年产值就达到了15亿元左右，”王焕然说。
Experienced workers
熟练的工人
Since Shucheng county has formed an intact industry chain for such businesses, it has been easy to find experienced workers locally, Sun said.
孙正海说，由于舒城县的这类企业已经形成了完整的产业链，在当地很容易找到熟练的工人。
For example, Chen Tongwei, 36, had been working for another local plant until three years ago, before observing the machinery and other workers in the Huayu plant, which has about 150 workers.
36岁的陈同为就是一个例子。她曾在当地的另外一家工厂工作，三年前来到华羽工厂，现在负责照看机器和其他工人的工作。华羽现在有150名左右工人。
Chen, a Hongdang villager, is responsible for quality control. Her husband works in a city far from home, and she stays in the village to take care of her son, a middle-school student. With a monthly wage of nearly 4,000 yuan, Chen said she is satisfied with her work and family arrangement.
陈同为也是洪宕村的村民，工作职责是质量管控。她的丈夫在远离家乡的城市工作，而她则留在家乡照顾上中学的儿子。拿着每月将近4000元的工资，陈同为对她的工作和家庭安排感到满意。
Cao Youjun, 71, a villager in Ganchahe, earns even more by raising 1,200 Wanxi white geese.
而干汊河镇的另一位71岁的村民曹友俊赚得更多，方式就是养1200羽皖西白鹅。

In early February, he purchased the goslings for the eighth year of his business.
二月初，曹友俊买来了小鹅苗。这是他第八年养鹅。
The breeders get subsidies from the local government to cover part of their costs, such as buying goslings, according to local officials.
当地官员说，这些养殖户还可以获得政府的补贴，比如用于分担购买鹅苗的支出。
Cao said the geese were the first group for this year and will be ready for sale in about three months. After that, Cao will raise 800 more.
曹友俊说这些白鹅只是今年的第一批，大概会在三个月后出栏。之后，他还打算再养800羽。
He started by raising just dozens of geese eight years ago, and then he believed he had enough experience to expand.
八年前，曹友俊从养几十羽开始尝试，等到他觉得自己有足够经验了，便扩大了规模。
"You don't worry about the selling, there are just so many buyers," said Cao, adding that the goose species is favored not only by feather processing companies but also restaurants and food processing companies.
“不用担心销路，自然有很多买家，”曹友俊说，皖西白鹅这一品种不仅受到羽毛加工企业的青睐，还深受到餐馆和食品加工企业的喜爱。
"In a single year, I can earn more than 60,000 yuan from the breeding," said Cao.
“我养鹅一年能赚到6万多元，”曹友俊说。
The locally produced feathers are preferred by down garment companies as well as sporting goods makers.
当地生产的羽毛是羽绒服装公司和体育用品制造商的首选。
Government statistics show that Lu'an's export value of feather and down products reached 810 million yuan last year.
政府统计数据显示，去年六安的羽毛羽绒产业出口额达到8.1亿元。
A city government plan in 2019 said the city's white goose breeding scale will reach more than 20 million annually by 2025, with the comprehensive total output value reaching more than 10 billion yuan.
六安市政府在2019年的一项规划中提到，到2025年，该市的白鹅养殖规模将达到每年2000万羽以上，综合产值将达到100亿元以上。
